Originally written in 1954 this book still enchants me and is still worth the read for everyone from age 10 and older. Don't look at the 2011 movie though, it's utter rubbish.
The short description is this: Set in Roman Britain this story is of a young Roman officer who sets out to discover the truth behind the mysterious disappearance of the Ninth Legion (in which his father served), who marched into the mists of Northern Britain (into the barbarian country behind the Hadrian wall) and never returned.
But it's so much more than that. It's a coming of age story of a young man who desperately wants to know what happened to his father and who wants to restore his reputation and the reputation of the vanished legion he served in. It's a quest for finding a place in the world where you belong. It's a well reasearched historical novel of Roman life in Britain at about 130 AD. And a story of an unlikely friendship between said young Roman and his British slave, based on mutual respect and the willingness to bridge cultural differences out of genuine interest in each other. I would not call in a bromance, although it's often interpreted in that way.
If there's anything you'd like to read from my list of fictional characters, I'd say, read this!
